Around 700 passengers who were stranded for almost 12 hours
in the Mumbai-Kolhapur Mahalaxmi Express have been rescued.
The train was stuck around 60 km away from Mumbai between Badlapur
and Vangani due to waterlogging and passengers could not go
anywhere. Passengers shared their ordeal from the train through social media
as the train stood on flooded tracks.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Railway Protection Force
(RPF), navy and air force were deployed to get the 700 passengers to
safety. Seven Navy teams and two IAF helicopters were involved to rescue the
people.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis congratulated
the teams for the successful rescue mission.
He tweeted, ”Happy to inform that all the passengers stranded in
#MahalaxmiExpress have been evacuated safely. Congratulations & Thank you
to @NDRFHQ , Army, @indiannavy , Airforce, Police, Indian Railways, Local
administration and entire team for this coordinated & great efforts!”
“IAF, Railways & state administration have safely rescued all the 700
passengers stranded on Mahalaxmi Exp near Mumbai due to heavy rain. We were
closely monitoring the entire operation. Kudos to the rescue teams for their
exemplary effort,” tweeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah
Heavy rainfall has disturbed day to day life in Mumbai and nearby areas
resulting in cancellation of several flights and delay in trains.
