Contest for 3D-Printable Assistive Devices for Kitchen Accessibility

A mission-driven design company dedicated to creating additive product solutions for individuals with upper limb difference has launched its second design contest, by popular demand.

Blue Heart Hero is inviting engineers, designers, and anyone who thinks outside the box to create designs for a 3D-printable assistive device that can make kitchens more accessible. Designs could include, for example, a product that helps those who are visually impaired cut vegetables, a refrigerator door attachment that helps individuals with lower dexterity, or a solution that assists individuals in underprivileged countries.

Last year, the Brooklyn, New York-based startup held a contest inviting designers to come up with a 3D printable design to help a child born with a partial right arm achieve her dream of mastering archery. Mia was born without fingers and just has her “lucky fin.”By seven years old, she wanted to follow in the footsteps of her Native American ancestors by learning archery. The winner of the contest was Brett Armstrong, an industrial designer from Australia, who designed an assistive product.

The Kitchen Accessibility contest is sponsored by Xometry, the leading platform for on-demand manufacturing, which will support the process of evaluation and the 3D printing of the finalists’ designs. The designs will be evaluated on Best Problem-solving Design, Smallest Solution, Best Sketch, Best Presentation, and additional categories.
