“If you want to walk fast, walk alone. If you want to walk far,
walk together.” This African proverb summarises the essence of the
Inclusion Walkathon 2019 in Bengaluru.

Come 21 July, Bengaluru will witness the Inclusion Walkathon
2019
, one of the initiatives of the India Inclusion
Foundation
. The first edition, held last year, saw a good response
from the disabled and non-disabled community.

The walkathon aims to spread the message of the beauty in a world without
barriers, discrimination and biases. The goal is to promote togetherness
among people coming from various backgrounds.

We aim to create inclusion through the walkathon. When people walk together
they get to understand the other person. They communicate and share their
thoughts with each other creating a positive conversation that is the first
step towards breaking social and mental barriers. We are not looking to
promote ourselves or our sponsors, the walkathon is purely for harmony and
inclusion. – Priyanka Agarwal, Team Member, India Inclusion
Foundation.

Inclusion Walkathon 2019 will see the participation of over 6,000 people,
with and without disabilities. The participants will walk with a buddy and
cover a distance of three or five kilometres. This will include blindfold
walking, where one person will be in blindfold and be guided by another for
half the distance. They will then exchange roles.

Major DP Singh, India’s first blade runner, will be there
to cheer and encourage the walkers.

Entry is free and there are many things for walkers to look forward to like
T-shirts, medals, breakfast and a fun cool down party. Music bands and
singers will be there as well to add some energy. The core team behind the
Walkathon includes people with disabilities, including those with
developmental disorders.

“This year too we have received an overwhelming response from the disabled
community”, says Karthik, a volunteer. “The buddy walk
concept touched many people and it helped create understanding among people
coming from different walks of life. We are thrilled to be a part of this
movement”.

The India Inclusion Foundation is encouraging people to organise walkathons
in their respective cities to be a part of the inclusion movement. The
walkathon is at Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. It starts
at 6AM so be there on 21st July. There will be volunteers and sign language
interpreters to make it memorable for all.
