The new Motor Vehicles Bill has tougher penalties and heavy
fines for road violations. The Bill is one step close to becoming a law after
it cleared in the Rajya Sabha this week. It has already been
cleared in the Lok Sabha.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has said the Bill once enacted
will instil fear in people who break traffic rules because there will now be
an intelligent traffic system to monitor offences.
Congratulating every citizen on passing of ‘The motor vehicle amendment
bill’ which will pave way to safer roads. I am thankful to the members of
the house who realised the gravity of the subject and voted in the favour
of the bill. Five lakh accidents happen in our country causing 1.5 lakh
deaths, every year. We are number one in accidents in the world, now we’ve
got the chance to correct this. – Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road
Transport & Highways, Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, Government
of India
The new Bill has won a huge round of applause from groups fighting for
improved road safety. One of them SaveLIFE Foundation
tweeted, “We thank our leaders for their support in this fight against road
crashes and look forward to working alongside them for effective
implementation”.
