Etched in the memory of every Indian is the Kargil war that took place
between 1999 May and July. In the conflict between India and Pakistan,
hundreds of soldiers from both sides lost their lives, not to forget the
civilians who were killed in cold-blood. 26 July 1999 is when
the war came to an end. On Friday, which was Kargil Vijay
Diwas
, India commemorated all brave jawans and victims of the war
who put down their lives for the victory of their soil. Indian Prime Minister
Narendra Modi took to social media to post a photograph of
him along with the jawans when he visited them during war times at Kargil. He
also commemorated the brave souls of Kargil.

During the Kargil War in 1999, I had the opportunity to go to Kargil and
show solidarity with our brave soldiers. This was the time when I was
working for my Party in J&K as well as Himachal Pradesh. The visit to
Kargil and interactions with soldiers are unforgettable-Narendra
Modi, Prime Minister of India.

The war was fought after Pakistan wanted to occupy Kargil part of Jammu and
Kashmir, which belonged to India. India carried off Operation
Vijay
to clear the conflict and ensure Kargil stays intact with
India. The war is also known for being an example of high-altitude warfare in
mountainous terrain.

Though India emerged victorious in the war, many families of the jawans who
lost their lives have still not fully gotten over the aftermath of losing
their close ones.

“On Kargil Vijay Diwas, a grateful nation acknowledges the gallantry of our
Armed Forces on the heights of Kargil in 1999. We salute the grit and valour
of those who defended India, and record our everlasting debt to those who
never returned. Jai Hind!”, tweeted Ramnath Kovind, President of
India.

Let’s remember the Great Sacrifices of Kargil War on the 20th Anniversary.
Let’s Salute & Pay Homage To Martyrs on “Vijay Divas”, tweeted
Kiren Rijiju, Union Sports Minister of India.

“On #KargilVijayDiwas, we salute the valour of our Armed Forces and
remember their sacrifices in the battle fought on the heights of #Kargil. We
shall always remain grateful and indebted to those soldiers who defended our
borders but could never return”, tweeted Ashok Gehlot, Chief
Minister of Rajasthan.
