The last rites of businessman V G Siddhartha were performed
yesterday evening at one of his coffee estates in Chikkamagaluru
district in Karnataka.
V G Siddhartha was the founder of popular café chain CCD-Café
Coffee Day and had gone missing on Monday. His body was recovered in
the backwaters of the Netravathi river by two fishermen
yesterday. It is suspected that he committed suicide by jumping off the
bridge on the river however, investigation is going on to ascertain the
facts.
After the autopsy, Siddhartha’s body was handed over to the family and was
later taken to his village Chattanahalli. Siddhartha is
survived by his wife Malavika Hegde and two sons,
Ishaan and Amartya. His son Amartya lit the
funeral pyre
Cremation of V G Siddhartha was attended by hundreds of people including
Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, former CM HD
Kumaraswamy, Siddhartha’s father-in-law and former Chief
Minister SM Krishna.
As per a letter written by V G Siddhartha on 27 July, he was under pressure
due to financial matters concerning his company. “I have failed as an
entrepreneur,” he said in the alleged letter.
Karnataka Congress tweeted about Siddhartha’s death and
blamed the government for creating unfavorable conditions for businesses.
“#VGSiddhartha case is very unfortunate. Result of harassment by IT
officials & decline of India’s entrepreneurial position turning
virulent by the day, with Tax Terror & collapse of economy Companies
which flourished under UPA have been shut down with many people being
jobless,” the tweet said.
Café Coffee Day tweeted, ”Today we remember the legend
that inspired us all. Thank you Chairman VG Siddhartha for your vision,
leadership and the great legacy.”
