United States President Donald Trump met Pakistan Prime
Minister Imran Khan at the White House on Monday where he
offered to mediate Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan.
Reportedly, Trump told that Indian Prime Minister Narendra
Modi
had asked him to help with the Kashmir issue, a statement that
sparked controversy. The Indian Foreign Ministry immediately stepped up and
denied Modi making such a statement. But the central government had to face
criticism after the statement from Trump came out.

President Trump says PM Modi asked him to mediate between India &
Pakistan on Kashmir! If true, PM Modi has betrayed India’s interests
& 1972 Shimla Agreement. A weak Foreign Ministry denial won’t do. PM
must tell the nation what transpired in the meeting between him &
@POTUS-Rahul Gandhi, President, Indian National Congress.

Ministers and leaders from opposition parties asked Modi to clarify on
Trump’s statement. Many leaders walked out of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on
Tuesday pointing out the controversy.

Many people took to social media to express their anxiety over Trump’s
statement.

“According to Trump, India’s Prime Minister Modi “actually said, ‘Would you
like to be a mediator or arbitrator?’ I said ‘Where?’ He said, ‘Kashmir.'”
India’s official spokesman just issued statement saying: “No such request has
been made by Prime Minister to the US President”, tweeted Senior
Congress Spokesperson Manu Raju.

In fact, Brad Sherman from the United States
Congress
apologised to India for the statement from Trump.

“Everyone who knows anything about foreign policy in South Asia knows that
#India consistently opposes third-party mediation re #Kashmir. Everyone knows
PM Modi would never suggest such a thing. Trump’s statement is amateurish
and delusional. And embarrassing”, tweeted Sherman.
